MERIDIAN — The Meridian Library District (MLD) Cherry Lane branch will close Aug. 9, 2025 for extensive renovations. The branch is expected to reopen winter 2026/2027.
The MLD Board of Trustees approved the closure date at its monthly July meeting.
The renovation project — for the branch located at 1326 W. Cherry Lane — will address issues stemming from the building’s HVAC, electrical, and fire systems, many of which have not been replaced since the branch opened in 1997. In addition to these critical updates, the renovation will add the following new features to the 27,600 square-foot branch:
- Additional parking
- An updated entry plaza
- New outdoor space
- 24-hour holds room
- New reservable spaces
- Improved program areas
- A drive-through book return
Funding for this project comes in part from the $14 million levy voters passed in 2019. The Cherry Lane renovation is the final project in a series of four that the levy has funded. Other projects include a renovated building in downtown Meridian for MLD’s business and technology branch, unBound, as well as two new branches in North and South Meridian, respectively.
MLD contracted with MSR Design for the Cherry Lane renovation, with a focus on resiliency, hands-on learning, lifelong education, engagement, adaptability, and community. As part of the planning process, MSR Design and MLD have appreciated and considered design input from library patrons, staff, community partners, and the Board. CM Company will oversee construction.
MLD’s Orchard Park and Pinnacle — the two other full-service branches — will remain in full operation while the renovations take place, as well as unBound, Tiny Library, Bookmobile and Home Delivery.
“After more than 28 years of service in Meridian, we are excited for the opportunity to update the Cherry Lane branch to meet the current and future needs of our community for the decades to come,” Library Director Nick Grove said. “We want to thank our community for providing this opportunity to improve the Meridian Library District by passing the 2019 Plant Facility Levy.”
