Program Description

Event Details

Learn how to use the CNC to make 3D designs files in wood! You'll learn how to safely use the machine, and will be given the materials and files to come back and create your own sculpted wood object!

The CNC can use 3D .stl files, the same files used for 3D printing, to create a relief carving. This class will teach the basics for those new to CNC, or serve as a refresher for more experienced CNC users. A hands-on demonstration will walk through the steps to find and evaluate an .stl file for use on the CNC, and then cut a 3D design during the classfrom walnut, maple, oak, cherry, or similar hardwood.

Participants will then:

  • Select from one of several small .stl-based 3D designs,

  • Be given a CNC-ready digital design file for their selected design,

  • Select milling-ready hardwood blanks to use to make their design,

  • Schedule a subsequent four-hour session to cut their 3D design.
